Boost Your Energy

Boosting Energy and Motivation During the Winter Months

Just because we’re New Englanders doesn’t mean we’re any less surprised each year when the days get shorter and the temperatures begin to drop. Before long, many of us slip into a kind of natural hibernation mode—curled up by the fire with a good book. And honestly, that sounds wonderful! But how do we boost our energy and motivation to keep moving, stay social, and take care of ourselves when the desire to stay home can feel almost impossible to resist?

While it’s natural to have quieter days during the winter, small, intentional changes can help support energy, mood, and overall well-being.

Keep Moving

Physical activity is one of the best ways to support both energy and mood. Movement doesn’t have to mean a trip to the gym or an intense workout. A short walk, gentle stretching, chair exercises, or simply moving around the house throughout the day can make a difference.

When weather makes outdoor activity difficult, look for safe ways to stay active indoors. Even a few minutes at a time can help.

Get Some Daylight

When the sun sets early, it can be tempting to spend the entire day indoors. Try to make time for natural light whenever possible. Open the curtains in the morning, sit near a sunny window, or take a short walk outside when weather and conditions allow.

A consistent morning routine that includes daylight can also help maintain a healthy sleep-wake schedule.

Stay Connected

Winter can sometimes lead to more isolation, particularly for older adults who have difficulty getting out of the house, but social connection plays an important role in emotional well-being.

Make an effort to stay connected through phone calls, video chats, visits with family and friends, community activities, or regular social outings. Having something to look forward to—even a weekly lunch or afternoon visit—can provide motivation and a sense of purpose.

Keep a Routine

When the days begin to blend together, motivation can be harder to find. Maintaining a daily routine can provide structure and give each day a sense of purpose.

Getting dressed each morning, eating meals at regular times, completing a household task, enjoying a favorite hobby, or planning an activity can all help create a rhythm to the day.

Nourish Your Body

Food and hydration can also affect how we feel throughout the day. Aim for balanced meals that include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and sources of protein. And remember to drink enough fluids—even when you don’t feel as thirsty as you might during warmer months.

If preparing meals becomes difficult or tiring, having some assistance at home can help ensure that nutritious meals remain part of the daily routine, remember ABC can help.

Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To

Motivation often comes from having something meaningful on the calendar. Plan small activities that bring enjoyment—a favorite television show, a book, a puzzle, a visit with a friend, a hobby, or a special meal.

Winter doesn’t have to be a season of simply waiting for spring. Finding small moments of purpose, connection, and enjoyment can make the colder months feel much more manageable.

Know When Extra Support May Be Needed

Occasional low energy is common, but a significant or persistent change in energy, mood, sleep, appetite, or interest in activities shouldn’t simply be dismissed as “the winter blues.” These changes can sometimes signal an underlying health concern or medication-related issue.

If you notice a lasting change in yourself or a loved one, talk with a healthcare provider.

At ABC Home Healthcare, we believe staying active, connected, and engaged is an important part of aging well. Our caregivers provide the support clients need to remain safe and independent at home, along with valuable companionship and social connection. As social circles become smaller and barriers to socializing increase, that regular connection can become even more important.

While helping with everyday needs, our caregivers also take the time to talk, listen, laugh, and engage with their clients. That one-on-one connection can be just as meaningful as the help they provide around the home.
