Finding a Calling in Caregiving – Meet Darlene
The warmth in Darlene’s voice is unmistakable. Even after only a brief 20-minute conversation, it was clear how deeply she impacts ABC and the clients she serves. Though I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting her in person yet, I quickly understood why she is so beloved here.
With nearly twelve years at ABC, Darlene has become a cornerstone—someone both our team and our clients know they can rely on. Her path to caregiving is an inspiring one. After thirty years as an operations manager in the import/export business, a company relocation prompted her to seek a new chapter. Following a long-held passion for healthcare, she enrolled at the Medical Institute in Malden, earning certifications in Phlebotomy, EKG, Home Health Aide, and Nursing Assistance. She completed her internship at Beth Israel and, while waiting for a hospital role, came across a posting for ABC.
“Once I started at ABC, I enjoyed it so much—I never looked back,” she told me.
From the very beginning, caregiving felt less like work and more like a calling. “I love my clients so much—they become family,” she shared. That love radiates in every story she tells.
When asked about challenges, Darlene didn’t list frustrations or difficulties. Instead, she emphasized the support she receives: “ABC and the coordinators are there for me, supporting whatever I need. They’re wonderful, patient, and kind.” The only weight she carries, she admitted, comes from moments of sadness—like when a younger client struggled with Alzheimer’s, or when she attended the funeral of a beloved client.
With emotion in her voice, Darlene recalled how the client’s granddaughter stood at the service and read a letter aloud: the best parts of her week were the times Darlene visited. “That really got me,” Darlene said quietly.
Stories like these remind us why caregiving matters so profoundly. The connections formed are not just professional—they are personal, life-changing, and deeply human.
Though Darlene considers herself “semi-retired,” her clients simply won’t let her go—and truthfully, she wouldn’t want it any other way. “I tried to work less, but my clients would call and ask for me, and I’d do anything for them.”
That devotion is the heart of caregiving. Darlene embodies it fully—with compassion, dedication, and love that touches everyone she meets.
At ABC, we’re grateful for her, and proud to share her story.
